What is a Sneak Attack?
It's a way to support independant artisans who are trying to sell their wares online. Two days a week at an appointed time, an Etsy shop with few or no sales is announced on this site. As many people as possible then buy items from that shop, resulting in a frenzy of surprise business to the unsuspecting shop! To the upper right is the current Sneak Attack schedule. To participate, show up on this site at or soon after the time of the next attack and you'll see the chosen shop name in the box above. Then go to that shop and purchase an item, making sure to include the words "Sneak Attack" in the "message to seller". It's also fun to tune into the current thread on Etsy to talk about it with other "attackers".

September 22nd: The Sneakers are throwing a Party–And You are Invited!

Sometimes one person has an idea that, once set into motion, grows beyond anything they ever imagined. In this case the person was Michael Phipps of Phippsart, and the idea was the sneak attack. Sneak Attacks have been described as “the dynamic of perpetual motion” by Coco of Handmade News. Michael started the sneak attacks in order to spread the warm fuzzy feeling he got when he made his first sale on Etsy and over the past year warm fuzzies have spread to 243 shops with a total of 2806 sales! On Thursday, September 24 2009 we are throwing a huge birthday bash for the sneak attacks.
TeamSNEAK got its start a little later, after a group of people had been participating in sneak attacks for some time. Theresa of MichiganHemp started the team because she felt it was “a better way to welcome someone to the wonderful world of Etsy!” While the team itself and most of its members weren’t around for that first sneak attack, we are very excited to be here to celebrate the first Sneakerversary.

Of course it wouldn’t be a celebration without a party, and it wouldn’t be a party without friends and strangers coming to share the cake, so on behalf of TeamSNEAK, I’d like to extend an invitation to the entire world of internet users to come celebrate with us. Like any good party, there will be lots of great conversation all week long (In the words of Sneaker shadesofvictoria “This week will be a riot!”).
The fun continues through Thursday evening, with a sneak attack announced at 7:00PM. The party culminates in a massive giveaway, where you can win a giant bucket of awesomeness worth over $300! In addition to the grand prize, there will also be 3 smaller individual giveaways. Winners will be announced at 12:00, 2:00, 4:00, and 6:00. How did you first discover Etsy?
Believe it or not I found it from a Google search for a new daily journal. I wanted something “different” and once I went to the Etsy site, I was hooked! I couldn’t believe there were so many unique items for sale on the site.

All of your books and journals are made with green and recycled materials. Tell us more about why you’ve made that decision.
I wanted to provide a one of a kind touch on a widely used item while staying eco-conscious. I studied textile design in college and recently took a master’s degree class on fabric design. The one thing that you can always look at is the design and trends of the past in order to determine what will be the trends of the future. It seems like everything as already been invented, designed and done before…. and it was all really great design!!! I took that and combined it with my personal passion for recycling and it became a recipe for success. For one thing… it is less expensive. And it is also the right thing to do… why throw away something that can be used for something else?

If you had to pick one animal to represent the essence of Sneak Attacks, what animal would it be and why?
A puppy… they will jump out from behind the door, under the bed or under the covers and scare the life out of you! And then they will wag their tail and lick your face until you smile!

Your books are beautiful, but not everybody is an avid journaler. What else can you do with blank books?
Thank you!!! I love to find out what people include in their journals! I have customers who use their journals like a scrapbook to hold their pictures, momentos, ticket stubs, maps, as well as memories and notes. I am a huge animal lover so I have seen the journals used as a way to remember the trials and tribulations of training our new puppy. Other uses include gardening journals including planting layouts, planting schedules, seed packets, pictures, etc., bird watching, restaurant reviews, poetry, the letters you want to write but will never mail, a book about me — A to Z books which include info about you or your kids or your family and friends, movie reviews, meeting notes, exercise or sport stats, house renovations, medical information, interviews with relatives, book notes, bucket list and my current journal — my first 100 days as Caradidi.

James and Kay live in Pearland, Texas with their 5 wonderful pups. Kay stole Molly from James’ parents, and Gremlin, Kayleigh, Jack, and Hunny are all rescues. Look for their sweet faces to pop up as avatars and look for Gremlin at your local ugliest dog contest. James works in finance and accounting and Kay runs her own faux finishing and re-design business. James spends his free time woodworking in his garage and Kay devotes her free time to her artwork, her furry children, and bad tv.

I love doing nice things for people. Sneak Attacks are a way to selfishly and selflessly help new and deserving Etsians. These shops deserve to be noticed and what better reason for me to go shopping. All of the wonderful friends we’ve made are a tremendous plus too.

What is your favorite experience with S.N.E.A.K. Team?
I would have to say our first sponsorship was a great experience. We got to choose 2 wonderful shops and make their week. It’s great building the suspense and having fun with everyone in the thread. There’s no better feeling when the shops check in or convo back about their surprise and appreciation. We’re glad to be in the sponsor list to do it all over again. The multiple hilarious stories that come out of the thread come in second.

What is your favorite thing to make, and why?
James loves starting new projects. Finishing them is the problem. So far, he really enjoys making anything from reclaimed wood. It makes him feel like he saved something, if that makes sense. Kay is enjoying the smaller scale drawings at the moment. She is used to large scale painting and enjoys the challenge that a smaller scale brings. She also enjoys combining Mexican folk art with Mehndi influenced strokes.

We are trying a different flavor for the giveaway based on comment volume.
