What is a Sneak Attack?

It's a way to support independant artisans who are trying to sell their wares online. Two days a week at an appointed time, an Etsy shop with few or no sales is announced on this site. As many people as possible then buy items from that shop, resulting in a frenzy of surprise business to the unsuspecting shop! To the upper right is the current Sneak Attack schedule. To participate, show up on this site at or soon after the time of the next attack and you'll see the chosen shop name in the box above. Then go to that shop and purchase an item, making sure to include the words "Sneak Attack" in the "message to seller". It's also fun to tune into the current thread on Etsy to talk about it with other "attackers".

September 22nd: Two Year Sneakerversary!

Wanna win all this?!
That’s right, Sneak Attacks are about to turn two years old!  The first Sneak Attack happened on September 24, 2008, and we’ll be celebrating the second annual “Sneakerversary” – two years of giving new/undiscovered Etsy shops a kindly boost – on Thursday, September 23, 2010, with a special Sneak Attack and a BIG giveaway of the above items generously donated by Etsy shop owners.   This is where you can enter to win!

Earn one entry for each of the following :

  • Leave a comment here… maybe share how you felt when you got the first sale in your Etsy shop, or tell us about your favorite item you’ve spotted during a Sneak Attack.
  • “Like” the Handmade Movement on facebook.
  • Follow the Handmade Movement on twitter.
  • Write a post on your own blog about the Second Annual Sneakerversary Giveaway, with a link to this blog post.
  • Share this blog post as a link on your facebook.

Ways to earn even more entries:

  • Tweet about the Second Annual Sneakerversary Giveaway on twitter, making sure to include “@Sneak_Attacks” and a link to this blog post.  You can earn one entry per week for additional tweets between August 26 and 3:00 p.m. Eastern time (we are GMT-5:00) on Thursday, September 23.
  • Purchase an item from the Handmade Movement’s shop on Etsy (sales in the shop help offset the cost of this website’s upkeep), then post a link to your transaction here.  Multiple purchases will earn you multiple entries.
  • Purchase an item in a Sneak Attack between August 26 and September 16, then post a link to your transaction here (if, for example, you make purchases in the August 26 and September 13 Sneak Attacks, posting your two transaction links here would earn you two entries).

Each thing that you choose to do to enter this giveaway must be posted as a separate comment here.  Please be sure to leave your contact information (like your email address or Etsy shop link) so you can be notified if you are the lucky winner.

Last year was a great party (you can read about the one-year Sneakerversary celebration here); please feel free to join us in our Sneakerversary thread, and click here for details about the goodies included in the giveaway!   Thanks for a wonderfully Sneaky two years!

July 1st: Meet LaRue & Handmade

Today, we have 2 sponsors for our Sneak Attack! And today’s attack is Make Someone’s Day! Many of us familiar with sneak attacks are asked to recommend 1 or 2 new shops that will be our ‘victims’. Usually our sponsor or sponsors introduce 2-3 victims total. So for today, there is no telling how many shops will be introduced! And lots of delightful items to purchase, heart and drool over!

Who are our sponsors today? Why Lisa from LaRue Fashions and Sandi from Handmade By Sandi!

Let me tell you a little bit about Lisa…

Busy with an 18 year old son, ready to enter college, a 3 year old daughter, and a successful Etsy shop you would think that Lisa has no time for extra hobbies. Well, about 10 years ago she started doing genealogy and loves it!

Says Lisa, During a visit to the cemetery where my grandfather is buried, I noticed that so many of the markers in there were disintegrating rapidly. With my roots in genealogy, I realized that these relatives would soon be lost to future generations of relatives searching for them. I began transcribing and photographing all of the cemeteries on our county, and posting them to the internet, for relatives to find.

Lisa also started creating chainmaille jewelry a couple of years ago – this is a favorite of mine!

A little bit about Sandi… Sandi and her husband are both retired from the federal government and now run a 40 acre farm, where they grow produce to sell to the local public. They also have chickens and sell eggs. The pace is fairly easy for 6 months out of the year, but starting in May and going through September, they sell sweet corn, which is their major crop. Hubby works the farm and Sandi runs the produce stand. And since she love to talk – that’s an easy job!

A little over a year ago, Sandi discovered felted bowls and now is obsessed with making them! So there are quite a few available in her Etsy shop – with more in the wings. Expanding that felting, she’s now making coasters! These are my favorite – love the spiral look.

Be sure to check out Lisa’s other chainmaille items and Sandi’s felted items. Then come chat with us in the Sneak Attack Thread! Lots of fun – guaranteed!

June 28th: Meet Beadsoul

Lisa, known as Beadsoul is sponsoring our Sneak Attack today.

What started out as a way to create something handmade to give her Mom as a gift, has mushroomed into a love of creating handcrafted jewelry that will take your breath away!

And not only does Lisa make incredible art – she also teaches it! And loves doing it!

I love sharing my knowledge and letting people “learn from my mistakes” and give them shortcuts so they can get right to work on the type of jewelry creations they are interested in. I am inspired every class just by seeing how another person looks at the same materials and creates a whole different piece and to see the “light go on” when they get a concept!

Now, being kind of partial to earrings (ok, an obsession), I just had to show you these!

Be sure to check out Lisa’s other exceptional jewelry, and come over and chat with us at our Sneak Attack thread.

June 24th: Meet Engel

Have you met Linda yet? Linda owns the Etsy shop Engelfelt, and we all call her Engel. Linda is sponsoring today’s Sneak Attack at 7pm, and we are looking forward to it, as Linda always comes up with such adorable shops to be our ‘victims’.

Linda comes from a family of Danish craftspeople and artists who have all passed on their interest and abilities to the next generations. She was named for her Danish material grandmother – Elisabeth Engel.

In thinking about a name for her Etsy shop, her sister in law actually suggested the Engel part (Engel means “angel” in danish, and I’ve always collected angels). So Engelfelt it was. Felt from felting – which Linda loves to do, yes. But felt from feeling even more.

Linda loves working with fiber of all kinds, and taught herself how to make the most delightful felted soaps that when wet, lather up and the wool gently exfoliates your skin. Ah, such luxury!

Be sure to check out the other felted soaps that Linda creates, and chat with us here on the Sneak Attack thread!

June 21st: Meet Stock

Really, her name is Annette, but everyone calls her Stock, or StockAnnette- which is her Etsy shop name. And Stock is sponsoring our ‘attack’ today.

Stock is one of our frequent sponsors – she loves to surprise everyone with all the great shops she discovers that need our help! And we are delighted to provide that help during our Sneak Attacks that happen twice a week.

Stock is our busy little bee, always knitting away!

One of Stock’s talents is creating Etsy Treauries. Etsy Treasuries are a way of highlighting a group of artists and their creations to make a shopping gallery.

Says Annette about the treasuries that she creates: Oh, Treasuries – I love them so! Sometimes they are inspired by one beautiful item I see on Etsy, and sometimes they are inspired by an event, a movie, or a memory. The hunt for “compatible” items is somehow very appealing to me… and it’s very fun, because the wealth of wonderful items on Etsy is limitless – I can always always find enough things to fill one!

Be sure to check out Stock’s adorable knitted hats for baby, and come chat with us at our Sneak Attack Thread! Our sneak attack starts at 7pm edt today.

June 17th: Meet KT

Katie, better known as KT is sponsoring our Sneak Attack today. I wanted to share a little bit about how her shop KtOriginals came to be.

According to Katie, I started off designing and sewing purses and pouches for a fellow artisan who owns his own store. Obviously, Katie’s creative ability was appreciated, and she decided to open her own Etsy shop almost a year ago.

Getting ideas from friends and family, Katie shares how she came up with this striking tote bag…

My Angry Cloud Lightening Bolt tote originated from a late night conversation I had with my best friend while driving through a thunderstorm. What a great bag!

Check out the other unique bags that Katie makes – and then come chat with us at our Sneak Attack Thread! Our sneak attack starts at 7pm edt today.

Til next time…

Sandi
