What is a Sneak Attack?

It's a way to support independant artisans who are trying to sell their wares online. Two days a week at an appointed time, an Etsy shop with few or no sales is announced on this site. As many people as possible then buy items from that shop, resulting in a frenzy of surprise business to the unsuspecting shop! To the upper right is the current Sneak Attack schedule. To participate, show up on this site at or soon after the time of the next attack and you'll see the chosen shop name in the box above. Then go to that shop and purchase an item, making sure to include the words "Sneak Attack" in the "message to seller". It's also fun to tune into the current thread on Etsy to talk about it with other "attackers".

August 25th: Two Year Sneakerversary!

That’s right, Sneak Attacks are about to turn two years old!  The first Sneak Attack happened on September 24, 2008, and we’ll be celebrating the second annual “Sneakerversary” – two years of giving new/undiscovered Etsy shops a kindly boost – on Thursday, September 23, 2010, with a special Sneak Attack and a BIG giveaway of items generously donated by Etsy shop owners.   This is where you can enter to win!

Earn one entry for each of the following :

  • Leave a comment here… maybe share how you felt when you got the first sale in your Etsy shop, or tell us about your favorite item you’ve spotted during a Sneak Attack.
  • “Like” the Handmade Movement on facebook.
  • Follow the Handmade Movement on twitter.
  • Write a post on your own blog about the Second Annual Sneakerversary Giveaway, with a link to this blog post.
  • Share this blog post as a link on your facebook.

Ways to earn even more entries:

  • Tweet about the Second Annual Sneakerversary Giveaway on twitter, making sure to include “@Sneak_Attacks” and a link to this blog post.  You can earn one entry per week for additional tweets between August 26 and 3:00 p.m. Eastern time (we are GMT-5:00) on Thursday, September 23.
  • Purchase an item from the Handmade Movement’s shop on Etsy (sales in the shop help offset the cost of this website’s upkeep), then post a link to your transaction here.  Multiple purchases will earn you multiple entries.
  • Purchase an item in a Sneak Attack between August 26 and September 20, then post a link to your transaction here (if, for example, you make purchases in the August 26 and September 13 Sneak Attacks, posting your two transaction links here would earn you two entries).

Each thing that you choose to do to enter this giveaway must be posted as a separate comment here.  Please be sure to leave your contact information (like your email address or Etsy shop link) so you can be notified if you are the lucky winner.

Last year was a great party (you can read about the one-year Sneakerversary celebration here); please feel free to join us in our regular discussion thread anytime, and stay tuned for details about the goodies to be included in the Sneakerversary Giveaway!   Thanks for a wonderfully Sneaky two years!

July 15th: Chris Knaggs Owner of The Wooded Lake Donates to the Giveaway

Chris Knaggs is the owner of The Wooded Lake on Etsy. She fell victim to a Sneak Attack the beginning of June and has joined in on the fun with the ‘Sneakers’, sponsoring a Sneak Attack and now donating to the Handmade Giveaway. Her shop is filled with creations that she describes as quirky, whimsical and slightly off-center. It’s okay though because she designed them that way. Chris tells us a little about how her designs are created;  ‘All of my items are made with love and care from fabric that I have collected from quilt shops, antique stores and every place in between’.

I went snooping in Chris’ shop and found that her talents extend far beyond the making of  the wonderfully woodsy Owl Trio that Chris donated to the Handmade Giveaway. Check out this Friendly Ghost just in time for Halloween.

Friendly GhostChris is not new to the artistic world of designing and creating  handmade items. She notes in her Etsy Bio, ‘I have been selling my handmade creations for a long time. I have been drawing all of my life and sewing and quilting for 17 years. I love to create and see my ideas and sketches come to life! ‘

Whatever the season you will find something unique to warm your home or give as a gift when you visit The Wooded Lake. I found these cute little Christmas Mice that are the perfect size to decorate a wreath or toss in a bowl and just look cute!

Christmas MiceNow that you know a bit more about Chris and can see some of the amazing things she has made, I know you are anxious to visit her shop. But wait! Before you go, don’t forget that you have the opportunity to WIN the Trio of Primitive Rustic Owl Sitters just by registering to win the Handmade Giveaway. They will arrive in your home absolutely FREE. You won’t even have to pay shipping. So get signed up and watch your email on July 29th or better yet,  join us in the Etsy forum thread before the Sneak Attack when the winner is announced. You could be the next winner of the Handmade Giveaway!

June 18th: Michael Phipps Owner of PhippsArt Donates to the Giveaway

Artist Micheal Phipps is the owner of PhippsArt and ScatterbrainTies on Etsy.  He is also the founder of The Handmade Movement website – Home of the Sneak Attack. Michael takes an active roll in promoting Sneak Attacks and supporting Etsy shop owners and the handmade community. Michael’s Angel and Devil T-Shirt, shown below, was in the Etsy Voter.

Angel Devil TMichael shares a little bit about himself in his shop bio. “I am an artist and illustrator who has been drawing and creating all my life. I have created illustrations for book covers, magazines, CD covers, posters, web sites, and more.” There is much more you can learn about Michael by visiting his Etsy shops and reading his Bio.

Have a look at a piece of Fine art you will find for sale in PhippsArt .

Fine ArtNow Michael is making his “wearable art” available to all of us absolutely free by donating to The Handmade Giveaway. This is your chance to own an original creation from an artist recognized by the Society of Illustrators and Communication Arts and in the Society’s New York gallery. All you have to do is sign up for the giveaway!

Don’t wait another minute! What you do in the next few minutes could decide if your name is drawn in the next Handmade Giveaway. Click the link in the upper right hand corner of the page and get registered to win. Then, jump on over to PhippsArt and pick out your favorite TShirt and check out all the original artwork in Michael’s shop. Don’t stop until you have visited ScatterbrainTies ~ you won’t want to miss a thing!

May 1st: Etsy Shop Owner Donates to our Giveaway

Etsy shop owners are a group of wonderfully creative and generous people. Their donations make The Handmade Giveaway possible. We thank them.

Spotlight on: Kelly owner of The Refinery Boutique on Etsy .com.

Kelly shares a little bit about herself in her Etsy shop profile: I am 24 years old, and have a degree in studio art and a vision to create an edgy, wholesome, chic jewelry line for people who appreciate the same. I have always been frustrated with the lack of the the type of jewelry that I envision wearing and finding pieces that work cohesively with my everyday life.
I have therefore set out to create strong, long-lasting pieces that make both strong and simple statements. I want to share my aesthetic of carefully crafted, feminine meets rustic, sophisticated meets organic jewelry and durable, attractive home decor and gifts.

My long term goal is to own my very own brick-and-mortar boutique in Massachusetts and I hope to use this Etsy shop as my launch point to share my little creations.

Read more about Kelly in her shop profile. Visit The Refinery Boutique to see more of Kelly’s work. Don’t leave without registering to win the necklace Kelly donated to The Handmade Giveaway for out current prize. You can register HERE or at the top righthand corner of this page.

November 22nd: Giveaways now last two weeks

The Handmade Movement will continue to sponsor giveaways from talented artists, but we are now extending the entry period to two weeks for each one. This will give the donating shops a bit more exposure. Click the “weekly giveaway” link on the upper right for information about the current contest. Many thanks to Sheree of shadesofvictoria.etsy.com for all the work she puts into coordinating all the giveways. Please visit her wonderful shop!
