What is a Sneak Attack?
It's a way to support independant artisans who are trying to sell their wares online. Two days a week at an appointed time, an Etsy shop with few or no sales is announced on this site. As many people as possible then buy items from that shop, resulting in a frenzy of surprise business to the unsuspecting shop! To the upper right is the current Sneak Attack schedule. To participate, show up on this site at or soon after the time of the next attack and you'll see the chosen shop name in the box above. Then go to that shop and purchase an item, making sure to include the words "Sneak Attack" in the "message to seller". It's also fun to tune into the current thread on Etsy to talk about it with other "attackers".

July 30th: Ginger Oliphant Owner of Going Places 2 Donates to the Giveaway
I would like to introduce you to Ginger Oliphant. Ginger is the proud owner of Going Places 2 on Etsy where she creates and sells art prints from her Inspirational Dog Print Series, as well as felted wool items made from recycled sweaters, plus a few other surprises.
Ginger tells us a little about herself in her Etsy profile, ‘I have always loved creating, crafting, designing and learning new things. I love paper & bright colors! I am a collector of inspirational quotes and like to use them in my artwork. I remember the days when I would search for “good” construction paper. Not any of that nasty, coarse stuff, but the smooth, bright and vivid kind. Perfect for all of that paper cutting I did.’ Well, Ginger has created some bright, cheery and colorful prints and filled her Etsy shop with them for our enjoyment! Take a look at this Collie print, one of my favorites.
Ginger’s love for dogs shines through in her creations just as her love for all things artistic is evident in her career choice. Employed as a graphic designer and a web designer she continuously nurtures her artistic side and it shows! I found this cute Apple Blossom Brooch as I browsed through Going Places 2.
I encourage you to take a few moments and stop by Ginger’s Etsy shop and pick out your favorite prints and see what all she has to offer. I am certain you will find several items that appeal to you. You will want to sign up for the Handmade Giveaway before you leave. With a little luck you could be our next winner and be able to enjoy Ginger’s Inspirational Dog Series in your own home! If you are the lucky winner you will receive an email on August 13th. Be one of the first to know by being in the Sneak Attack Forum thread that night.
Until then, don’t forget that you can join a fantastic group of fun loving Sneakers and help surprise an unsuspecting new Etsy shop owner any Monday and Thursday evening. No official invitation needed and no team to join. Stop into the Etsy forum thread and say ‘hi’ or just lurk about and see how crazy it can get!
June 16th: Well Said…
Have you ever tried to explain something and someone else comes along and says it better than you did? Sheree of ShadesofVictoria sums up our current plans and longstanding mission in this well-articulated blog post (click here to read it).
Sheree has been in charge of coordinating our giveaways for a while now– make sure to enter the current one! (Click the “Weekly Giveaway” link on the upper right of this site.)
June 4th: Something’s Coming…
Could it be? Yes, it could.
Something’s coming, something good,
If I can wait!
Something’s coming, I don’t know what it is,
But it is
Gonna be great!
Big things are happening here at the Handmade Movement. Over a year and a half ago, we started sneaking in on new and undiscovered Etsy shops and going on shopping sprees- and we aren’t about to stop.
We added Wordpress to the Handmade Movement web site last year, but until now we haven’t put the effort in to making it really happen. But behind the scenes we’ve been pulling together a team of creative souls who are ready to turn this into something worth coming back to again and again. We’re currently planning a number of blog features and will be rolling them out over the next two weeks. Is there something you’d like to see? Let us know in the comment section of this post.
Could be!
Who knows?
There’s something due any day;
I will know right away,
Soon as it shows.
It may come cannonballing down through the sky,
Gleam in its eye,
Bright as a rose!
June 1st: New Facebook Page

We’re on Facebook!
Again.
We had a page, but it got carried away in an unexpected gust of wind. Now it’s back and staked down a bit better. Come join us! Here’s the link: The Handmade Movement on Facebook
May 1st: Etsy Shop Owner Donates to our Giveaway
Etsy shop owners are a group of wonderfully creative and generous people. Their donations make The Handmade Giveaway possible. We thank them.
Spotlight on: Kelly owner of The Refinery Boutique on Etsy .com.
Kelly shares a little bit about herself in her Etsy shop profile: I am 24 years old, and have a degree in studio art and a vision to create an edgy, wholesome, chic jewelry line for people who appreciate the same. I have always been frustrated with the lack of the the type of jewelry that I envision wearing and finding pieces that work cohesively with my everyday life.
I have therefore set out to create strong, long-lasting pieces that make both strong and simple statements. I want to share my aesthetic of carefully crafted, feminine meets rustic, sophisticated meets organic jewelry and durable, attractive home decor and gifts.
My long term goal is to own my very own brick-and-mortar boutique in Massachusetts and I hope to use this Etsy shop as my launch point to share my little creations.
Read more about Kelly in her shop profile. Visit The Refinery Boutique to see more of Kelly’s work. Don’t leave without registering to win the necklace Kelly donated to The Handmade Giveaway for out current prize. You can register HERE or at the top righthand corner of this page.
March 3rd: Yes, I see… Sneak Attacks. But what’s this I hear about a Sneak Team?
We’ve all been through it. “Whoo-hoo! I’ve joined Etsy! I’ve got wares to peddle, baby!” Then you start looking through forums and the Storque; you might even pop into a lab or two. You really begin feeling the sense of community here, and you begin to understand and appreciate the community’s rules of engagement. Infused in all you learn, the sense of community sweeps you up and drops you off at the Etsy Teams page. “Hey! I like teams. I’m a player. Lemme just roll on over here and check out the list of possibilities. Whoa. That’s a long list of possibilities.”
Sound familiar? You might choose a team based on your geographical proximity to other Etsy sellers, you might choose one based around your particular craft, or you might choose one based on a specific life interest. Perfect. Though for you, “specific life interest” means your desire to help others. You like to give, and then give some more. You’d give your kidney to a stranger. Well, you like to give, anyway. Guess what? This characteristic seems to transcend Etsy sellers like none other. You’re in good company.
Perhaps you’re a seasoned seller. You feel like you have some extra time to dedicate to a team, and you’d like to focus on something new. Remember what it felt like to be a new seller? Checking your e-mail like you were waiting to hear back from a first date. And the thrill of your first sale? Can you even describe that feeling without needing a moment? Well, not only can you participate in the movement that helps loads of other sellers experience that glorious moment, but you can serve to expand and propel that movement through your participation within the scope of the team.
The Sneak Team is all about helping others and giving back. Welcome to the place you’re sure to feel at home; because baby, if the rest of us fit in here, you will too!
I won’t give you a long history lesson on how the Sneak Team started; the important thing here: we’re rolling. Basically, we were doing well in our goal to give some Etsy sellers a boost, but we didn’t really have a direction in which to move forward. Our hope is, by formalizing ourselves into a team, we’ve become more organized, we’ve gained more momentum, and we can do that much more good with this bit of structure. At the same time, we’ve deliberately tried to strike a balance between a rigid structure and complete anarchy. I like to think of it as organized chaos. We wanted more organization so we could move forward in a positive way, but we wanted to retain the indomitably welcoming, relaxed, and ultimately fun atmosphere within our group. We chat constantly; the only time you’re not likely to find activity is between the hours of 3 and 6AM, Etsy time. Even that’s not a given, since we boast members from across the globe and members who are complete insomniacs. We laugh with each other, we hurt with each other, we help each other, and we argue sometimes, too. Is it starting to sound like a family? Well, it is. It’s our Etsy family.
We’re akin to the type of family who adopts multiple kids and animals, formally and informally, and claims people as aunts, uncles, and cousins when there’s no blood relation. It’s a big crazy party, but now, since we’re a team with some organization and direction, everyone will be fed, and keys will be taken when you’re not in any kind of shape to drive home.
Wow, have I tempted you yet? Don’t mind my going on, just come have a look for yourself on our regular forum. If we don’t have you laughing one minute, crying the next, and then wondering how you ever got along without us, I’ll eat this post. I’ll print it out on a single sheet of paper, and I will eat it. Join us.
Oh, I’m sorry- you’d like actual information? Pardon. Here you are:
Rules & Regulations for membership:
- Participation is key. Active participation keeps this team going in the right direction and helps further our cause. Each team member will attend at least two sneak attacks per month. “Active participation” in a thread varies, but it should be more than simply, “Hi, and bye!” Treasuries, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs are additional suggestions for active team participation.
- To ensure this team is a good fit for you, and the endeavor is something to which you can dedicate appropriate time, we have instituted a one-month probationary period.
- Please tell us if you have multiple shops, and we will add them to the roll. As well, if you open an additional shop, let the team leader know, and that new shop will be added to the roll. It will not be automatic; we just won’t have time to search for team members’ new shops to add.
- Team members will carry announcements in their shops (in each, if multiple shops) about being Sneak Team members, with a link to www.handmademovement.com. Can be as simple as: “Proud member of Etsy S.N.E.A.K. Team. For more information, please go to www.handmademovement.com.”
- Members will use Sneak Team tags (”sneakteam”) on shop listings. Tags are a great asset in a search (in curating Treasuries, for example) and will soon be used in a search option on the blog.
- The Sneak Attack threads are not forums for self promotion. These threads should be dedicated to promoting and sharing new/undiscovered shops and our Sneak Attack victims.
- Finally, we ask that all team members register with our team forum. We discuss team-business matters in this forum, and having everyone register facilitates group communication. You can find the forum here: www.sneakteam.ning.com. If you have any difficulties with it, please let me know.
Please contact yours truly, Kay at verveinteriors.esty.com, to inquire about joining our team. I’ll look forward to meeting you!
